SPELLBINDER'S COMEDY CLUB

Numerous grand scale foam carving applications including three 24' oak trees, 10' theatrical masks, 26' tall columns, a 10' mast head, as well as numerous animal sculptures. My initial job as one of the Senior Sculptors was to spray up the form in foam, and direct an assisting team of sculptors in the carving and refining stages. The finished foam piece is then spraycoated with rigid polyurethane and detail work is done in Magic Sculpt.

As one of the Senior Staff Sculptors and Head of the Model Shop at Chiodo Entertainment, I am constantly given the most challenging of pieces. When I was first given this design by another artist I was presented with the challenge of creating an elaborate and intricately, detailed sculpture with a very tight budget that did not allow for a multi piece mold. Not to mention meeting a strict weight limit. I utilized a technique that was first pioneered during the Jazz Court project of carving the rough form out of foam, then covering and detailing the surface with a thin layer of Magic Sculpt, which is durable and passes fire code. Windows were cut in key areas, and a solvent was then used to dissolve the foam out thereby leaving a hallow, lightweight Magic Sculpt shell. What you have, is a sculpture with floating, sea anemone like edges that seemingly defy gravity. Since Magic Sculpt passes Fire Code, an armature could be welded directly inside. Because it was an amazingly successful technique, it became a standard method for several more projects. 25 pieces total.
